Sound Like Yourself

When I’m stuck in a creative rut, I look to the greats. Most of the time it’s my #broadwayjesus, Audra McDonald.

Yesterday, I decided to take what I do when I’m in a creative rut and apply it to a non creative task.

I’ve been dragging my feet on finishing my website copy. I’ll jump on it first thing in the morning, and my brain will start editing before I’ve written anything. Client emails and workshop building will take over. 60 mins later, I’ll have barely progressed.

After staring at my computer for too long, yesterday, I set a timer for 5 minutes. I went to Youtube and watched 1998 curly haired Audra crush “Down With Love” at Carnegie Hall.

You see...Barbra Streisand made this song famous in 1963 on her second album and Audra’s soprano is nothing like hers. But Audra doesn’t care. Audra knows what her strengths are and uses her signature classical sound to win the audience over.

The greats sound like themselves. They don’t edit while creating. They create first. Edit later.

3 minutes and 43 seconds of Audra was all I needed to get my fingers flying.

So... tell me in the comments! When you’re stuck, who are the greats you look to?
